Chris completed his doctorate in high-energy physics at Cambridge in 1980, after reading the full Cambridge Mathematics Tripos with double first-class honours.
His thesis, Phenomenological extensions of the quark parton model, was supervised by Peter Landshoff in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. From it he published three single-author papers in Zeitschrift für Physik C on hadron production: a semi-classical model for e⁺e⁻ final states, a phenomenological analysis of Fermilab high-mass dihadron data, and a demonstration that the constituent interchange model does not predict the dimensional counting rules.
