With Francesco Paresce, Chris used ground-based coronagraphy to image faint circumstellar material close to bright stars. Their papers from 1986–89 include broad-band imaging of the β Pictoris disk, high-resolution coronagraphy of the environment of SN 1987A, and the inner nebula of R Aquarii.
